Every symbol defined in this handbook, alphabetically (leading articles ignored), with its receipts and owning section.
- the 144,000 / the remnant = the last generation — the sealed servants of God, redeemed from among men as firstfruits, following the Lamb whithersoever He goeth, without guile and without fault before the throne, the remnant of Israel that shall not do iniquity nor speak lies; in them the gospel's power is demonstrated and God is vindicated (Rev. 14:1-5; Rev. 7:2-4; Zeph. 3:13; Eph. 5:27; Jude 1:24; LDE 219.4). — defined in "The Harvest — A People in Whom Christ Is Vindicated".
- the breath / spirit of life = the impersonal, God-given life-power that animates the dust — common to man and beast, sustained moment by moment, returning to God at death as life-power without consciousness (Job 33:4; Job 27:3; Gen. 7:22; Ps. 104:29; Eccl. 12:7; Ps. 146:4; Job 34:14-15). — defined in "Dust and Breath — What Man Is".
- the close of probation = the moment Christ's priestly mediation ends and every character is fixed forever — every case decided in the cleansing of the sanctuary, the decree of Rev. 22:11 spoken because "I come quickly," the temple shut by the glory of God with no ministration while the plagues fall, Michael standing up from His mediatorial seat (Rev. 22:11-12; Rev. 15:8; Lev. 16:17; Dan. 8:14; Dan. 12:1). — defined in "The Time of Trouble — Standing Without a Mediator".
- the faith of Jesus = the very faith by which Christ overcame, authored and finished by Him, now living in the saints and producing commandment-keeping; trust in His ability to save amply, fully, and entirely (Rev. 14:12; Rev. 3:21; Heb. 12:2; Gal. 2:20; 1 John 5:3-4; CWCP 50.1; 3SM 172.3; TMR 134.2). — defined in "The Commandments of God and the Faith of Jesus".
- the flesh / fallen nature = the inherited corruption — a real bent that inclines toward evil and holds the natural man in bondage until Christ delivers; "sin that dwelleth in me" as a resident power, but not itself guilt — it condemns only when obeyed (Ps. 51:5; Eph. 2:3; Rom. 7:14, 17-18, 23-25). — defined in "What Sin Is — Transgression, Not Inheritance".
- the harvest / the ripe grain = the ripened likeness of Christ reproduced in His people — character matured from blade to full corn — which is itself the signal for the sickle; the ripeness of the crop, not an arbitrary date, sets the hour of His coming (Mark 4:26-29; Rev. 14:15; James 5:7-8; Rev. 19:7-8; COL 69.1). — defined in "The Harvest — A People in Whom Christ Is Vindicated".
- imputed for righteousness / counted / reckoned = to credit to the believer's account a righteousness he did not earn — faith "counted... for righteousness" to him "that worketh not, but believeth on him that justifieth the ungodly"; the legal ground of the believer's title (Gen. 15:6; Rom. 4:3-5; Rom. 4:22-25; 2 Cor. 5:21; FW 18.1). — defined in "Righteousness by Faith — The Third Angel’s Message in Verity".
- the just shall live by faith = the believer becomes just by faith and continues the whole Christian life by that same faith — entire dependence on the word of God; self-lifted works excluded from first to last (Hab. 2:4; Rom. 1:16-17; LOF_ATJ 38.8-9). — defined in "Righteousness by Faith — The Third Angel’s Message in Verity".
- the living soul = the whole man himself — the sum produced when God joined dust (body) to the breath of life; man does not have a soul, he IS one, an indivisible and mortal unit (Gen. 2:7; 1 Cor. 15:45; Ezek. 18:4; Eccl. 9:5; Ps. 146:4). — defined in "Dust and Breath — What Man Is".
- the new birth (born again / born of water and of the Spirit) = the Spirit re-creating the whole man — an entire change of the entire man, a new heart and new spirit given, so that the man becomes a new creature able to see and enter the kingdom; the second birth that puts a man where Christ stood from His first birth, inside the Spirit-filled, God-surrendered life (John 3:3-7; 2 Cor. 5:17; Eze. 36:26-27; Titus 3:5; 2 Pet. 1:4; TDG 48.4). — defined in "Born of Water and of the Spirit — How He Lived, How We Begin".
- the overcomer = one in whom the born-of-God life triumphs over sin and the world — not by native strength but by Christ living out in fallen flesh the very victory He Himself won; the same faith (1 John 5:4), the same keeping (1 John 5:18), the same victory (Rev. 3:21, "even as I also overcame"; Gal. 2:20) — the normal Christian assumed by every church-letter promise (Rev. 2:7; 3:12), "made free from sin" (Rom. 6:22) under the charter "sin shall not have dominion" (Rom. 6:14). — defined in "Complete Victory — Overcoming as He Overcame".
- righteousness by faith = Christ's own righteousness given to the believer in two inseparable modes: IMPUTED — His obedience counted to the believer, the title (Gen. 15:6; Rom. 3:24-28; Rom. 4:3-5, 22-25; 2 Cor. 5:21; Phil. 3:9); and IMPARTED — Christ living in the believer by faith, fulfilling the law's righteousness in him, the fitness (Rom. 8:3-4; Gal. 2:20; Gal. 5:6; 1 Cor. 1:30; DA 300.1). Its Name is THE LORD OUR RIGHTEOUSNESS (Jer. 23:6); obedience is its fruit, never its root, and never optional (Eph. 2:8-10; James 2:17-18). — defined in "Righteousness by Faith — The Third Angel’s Message in Verity".
- salvation = God saving man FROM sin — from its guilt (justification), from its power and dominion (sanctification), and at last from its very presence (glorification); the restoration of the image of God in the soul by the indwelling Christ — not a legal status only but a Person possessed and a nature renewed — reaching to the uttermost (Matt. 1:21; Ps. 130:8; Rom. 6:18, 22; John 8:36; Col. 3:10; 2 Cor. 3:18; Col. 1:27; Gal. 2:20; Heb. 7:25; 1 John 3:2-3, 5, 8; Titus 2:14). — defined in "What Salvation Really Is — Saved From Sin".
- the second Adam = Christ as the new head and representative of the human race, standing where the first Adam fell — in fallen flesh, rendering unbroken obedience where the first man disobeyed, a real re-run of Adam's probation in the condition of Adam's ruined descendants, His obedience reckoned to the many as Adam's disobedience was (1 Cor. 15:45, 47; Rom. 5:19; Heb. 2:16-17). — defined in "The Second Adam — The Nature Christ Took".
- sin = the consented transgression of God's law — a chosen act against a known standard, born when desire conceives (the will yields); defined by the law, not by birth; guilt attaches to the choice, never to the mere presence of a fallen inclination (1 John 3:4; James 1:14-15; John 8:34; Ezek. 18:20; Rom. 3:23). — defined in "What Sin Is — Transgression, Not Inheritance".
- sinful flesh = the fallen, hereditary, degenerate human nature — weakened by four thousand years of sin, tempted from within and without — which Christ actually took and in which He never once consented to sin; the nature He bore, never any sin He committed (Rom. 8:3; Rom. 1:3; Heb. 2:14; Heb. 4:15; 2 Cor. 5:21). — defined in "The Second Adam — The Nature Christ Took".
- the third angel's message = the everlasting gospel in its judgment-hour form: righteousness by faith producing a commandment-keeping people — never law apart from gospel (Rev. 14:6-7; Rev. 14:9-12; Rom. 1:16-17; 1SM 372.2; AJB 301.1). — defined in "The Commandments of God and the Faith of Jesus".
- the time of Jacob's trouble = the unequalled final anguish of the righteous after probation closes — the sealed saints, marked so the destroyer cannot touch them, wrestling without an intercessor as Jacob wrestled alone, prevailing by weeping and supplication because their sins have gone beforehand to judgment, and "saved out of it," every name written in the book (Jer. 30:6-7; Dan. 12:1; Gen. 32:24, 26, 28; Hos. 12:4; Rev. 7:3; Eze. 9:6). — defined in "The Time of Trouble — Standing Without a Mediator".
- the washing / the laver of regeneration (regeneration by water, word, and Spirit) = the cleansing of regeneration in which washing and power are joined and inseparable — water sprinkled clean, the word that sanctifies, and the renewing of the Holy Ghost are one act, removing filthiness AND supplying the indwelling Spirit that causes the cleansed one to walk in God's statutes; not by might or works, but by the Spirit (Titus 3:5; Eph. 5:26; Eze. 36:25-27; Zech. 4:6; SD 105.3). — defined in "Born of Water and of the Spirit — How He Lived, How We Begin".
